Great Start for The Blues

The Blues began their Under 9 campaign at a warm Castleview venue. Gone were the winds of Temple Park and what a welcome relief that was!

Coaches were apprehensive about the transition to 7-a-side, larger pitches and even larger playing time but, this time at least, these reservations were smashed. The team responded brilliantly to the new format, particularly when one considers that we had no friendlies at this level. Passing was improved and space was utilised much more effectively for parts of the match. Despite only having one substitute each player gave their all for the full 50 minutes playing time.

Finn scored two crackers and covered every blade of grass; almost as much as Danny who ran himself ragged. Rafi was a power house in midfield, Beth created for others and transitioned between positions well. Max and Nathan, partners at the back for most of the game, coped well with Lyon's attacks and Jake pulled off some great stops. Finlay showed that he will be a great addition to the team and threw in some wicked crosses. Jake was awarded "Player of the Game" and goes into next weeks game as Captain, with Rafi receiving the new medal for "Excellent Contribution" (we'll think of a different name for it soon!)

Instances of crowding each other (our old foe!) still occurred, particularly from throw ins and at times we were caught watching the ball and not the forward runs of the opposition. Time spent defending too deep was noted. At times,we made the wrong choice of trying to run with the ball too much when a pass would have opened up more chances for attack. But this is why we train, so we can improve these minor flaws.

The game was played in a great atmosphere and Lyon deserved their goal, helping to make the game a great spectacle for coaches and parents.

We hope that we can continue this level of performance into next weeks match against Roker Rangers.
