What a game we had today! So competitive, in a great location against a well-coached side. Both teams showed skill and determination to win the ball. After the first 5-10 minutes Washington were looking more dominant however Birtley were still playing the ball around nicely and hitting us on the break. Luke had some amazing runs with the ball and worked will with Lennon and Lucas to pass the ball around the Birtley defence. All of the boys chased back to support their team mates making it hard for the opposition to get off a shot. Henry made some great saves whenever Birtley were able to get a shot away. The goal was definitely coming with great runs and lots of corners coming close but Birtley withheld the attacks. A great piece of skill and an excellent finish by Luke opened the scoring with a nutmeg on a defender and calmly placing it into the net. What a goal by Young Jackson. All of the boys were playing so well and their desire to get forward was excellent. Lennon made sure he was always back in position ready for any attack coming our way. Leon had great positional play and wasn’t scared to face of to any one of the Birtley lads.
However, the Birtley lads weren’t ready to give up and with some great determination down the right hand side they placed the ball in the box which then found the back of our net, 1-1. The half time call came around and the Washy coaches reminded the lads how amazing they had been playing trying to spark a fire in them to win against a very good side. A few changes at half time saw Lennox come on for Luke who had an outstanding game and Alex come on for Leon.
The game was still very tight with chances at both ends it seemed the Washy lads and Birtley lads were taking turns with shots. But, Lennox was on fire today and showed quick feet to cut inside and strength to take any tackles that come his way. He got his reward with a goal just after the half time, 2-1. With still a lot of time left Lucas made way for Ollie in midfield to support Lennox who looked like he may score again. Ollie and Lennox worked tirelessly with the ball and off the ball together. Lennon and Alex sometimes were out of position but talked with each other to make sure they covered each other. It really was a tight game to call and not unexpectedly Birtley found and equaliser 2-2 with 5 minutes to go. The Washy coaches showed belief in their team that they could win this but it seemed like it was going to be a draw, nothing seemed to go in with Ollie hitting shots towards the goal, Lennon joining and Lennox smashing a free kick off the crossbar. Everyone thought this was over! However, in the dyeing seconds Ollie and Lennox found space down the left wing and with a bit of a scrappy goal Lennox scored the winner! What a game of football! Birtley were excellent and fully deserved a point but the Washy lads took the win.
